Most people know the most popular golf courses close to Hua Hin in Thailand but sometimes it pays to travel a little further afield. That’s the case with Kaeng Krachan Golf Course, which is located just over an 1 hour away from central Hua Hin.
In fact, you must travel inland to this golf course, which is situated in the Kaeng Krachan National Park. As one might expect from a golf course in a national park, the scenery is phenomenal and you are treated to views of mountain ranges, lakes and lush forest. The golf course is also at a higher altitude than many in Hua Hin and this makes for a pleasant climate.
The 27-hole golf course is somewhat of a hidden gem and visitors begin to realise they are somewhere special on approach to the course.
The original set of 18 holes opened for play in 1995 and were designed by Cherd Boonyaratavej. It is a parkland layout which winds its way across the hills and is reminiscent of golf courses in Portugal. The additional set of 9 holes was designed by Jack Nicklaus and was established in 2007.
This is very much a typical Nicklaus design with well-protected greens but wide fairways, encouraging players to pull out the driver on the par-4 and par-5 holes.
The Nicklaus Course is also known as the Mountain Course and it is easy to see why. The course is set among spectacular mountains and it is a great setting for a round of golf. For those who played many Nicklaus design courses before, the interesting aspect of this layout is the number of holes which feature a dogleg left.
Many of his other courses tend to have more dogleg right holes, so this is something of a unique Nicklaus design.
The original set of 18 holes are split into two sets of nine called the Valley and Lakes Course. In contrast to the Mountain Course, the fairways are not so generous and accuracy off the tee is essential to avoid the bamboo forest and trees which line the fairways.
There are several natural lakes which come into play throughout the original 18 holes. As you can imagine from the name of the courses, the Lakes Course is where you will find the bulk of these holes and there are six in total.
The facilities at Kaeng Krachan Golf Course include a clubhouse and resort. These are basic in the most part and while you may not want to stay overnight, the clubhouse is a good place for a drink and something to eat following an excellent round of golf.
